Tempus Two steals the mantle of Australia’s best Semillon producer

Tempus Two steals the mantle of Australia’s best Semillon producer

-         Trophies announced at Australia’s number one wine show –

While is has traditionally been fellow Hunter Valley winery, Tyrrells Wines that scoop the trophy pool with its Vat 1 Semillon, this year it has been all about Tempus Two.

Last night, Thursday 25 November, at a gala dinner Hotel Realm in Canberra, Tempus Two’s Copper Zenith Semillon 2005 was awarded the Corti Brothers Trophy for Best Semillon at the Dan Murphy’s National Wine Show of Australia – Australia’s most prestigious and anticipated wine show.

This win adds to a growing list of crème de la crème accolades that have been awarded to vintages of the Copper Zenith Semillon ranging between the very first, 2003 and the recently released, 2010. The list includes:

  •  Drinan Trophy for Best Dry White of Show at the 2010 Hunter Valley Wine Show Awards
  •   Best Wine in NSW and trophy for the Best Mature Dry White Wine at the 2010 Clear Image NSW Wine Awards
  •  Best White Wine in the Premium and Aged Vintage Classes at the Macquarie Group Sydney Royal Wine Show
  • Gold at the Decanter World Wine Awards in London
  • Trophy for Best Dry White at the 2010 Dan Murphy’s National Wine Show of Australia

Dan Murphy’s National Wine Show saw the highest benchmark of entries with wines only entitled to enter if they were produced in Australia and had previously been awarded a medal at a capital city or approved regional show.

Tempus Two Head Winemaker Scott Comyns, is delighted with the prestigious award win.

“I’m incredibly proud of this achievement and thrilled with the success of the Zenith Semillon across all ages - young to old“, Comyns said.

“2003 was our first attempt at the Semillon varietal, and we are all really proud that we got it right! Our Copper Range is known for being modern and slightly irreverent, combining inspiration from the south of France and Spanish countryside with a cheeky Aussie twist.“

Chaired by Australia’s youngest ever chairman, Tom Carson, this year’s panel included two international judges; Tim Wildman from the United Kingdom and New Zealand’s Warren Gibson who judged alongside 10 Australian judges and eight associate judges. Judging of the 1,556 entries took place over four days with wines tasted once more to select the 25 trophy winners from the top golds.

The 2005 Copper Zenith Semillon is available through Tempus Two Cellar Door only with a RRP $35.

Overview                   The growing season for the 2005 vintage followed a very dry winter. Early spring rains proved adequate, and replenished water deficits. The major seasonal influence that followed through spring and early summer were mild, steady temperatures reminiscent of the great 2000 vintage. In general terms, the weather pattern was one of mild to warm days with unusually cool nights punctuated by rain events that tended to accelerate vine growth and fill out the crop. The normal heat spikes that can occur for the Hunter were limited, and followed by cool to mild periods. Yields for the 2005 vintage were about average. The wine shows intense varietal aromas and flavours balanced by crisp acidity.

Tempus Two’s roots are firmly planted in one of Australia’s oldest wine regions, and one of Australia’s best known wine families.  Founder Lisa McGuigan is the fourth generation of a dynasty of celebrated vintners, the McGuigans.  Launched in 1998 as Hermitage Road, the Tempus Two brand - which is Latin for ‘Second Time” - was born soon after. The vision for Tempus Two remains to create wine which looks as fantastic as it tastes; combining the essence of tradition with the magic of innovation, across the Pewter, Copper and Varietal ranges.  Tempus Two’s iconic cellar door is nestled in the foothills of the Hunter Valley’s Brokenback Ranges, just outside Pokolbin.
